The European Union will continue to support BiH in the efforts it is making in order to accede to the European family as soon as possible, said Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, after a meeting with Dragan Covic and Bakir Izetbegovic, chair and member of the BiH Presidency.
“For BiH there is no alternative, the only alternative is the European Union,” stressed Tusk, the Anadolu Agency reports.
He said that this year marks 20 years since the signing of the Dayton Peace Accord and that BiH citizens have lived too long in the shadow of Dayton.
“We want to help you so your citizens in full capacity join the European path as soon as possible. We are here to offer you all essential assistance in the challenges that lie before you, in order to continue with the fastest possible accession to the EU and to leave the past behind you,” said Tusk.
Chairman Covic said that the security problems in BiH must not be a reason to stop the country’s European path.
“We will continue to realize the commitments of the Reform Agenda. In the past six months we worked intensively on reforms and our commitment remains to the EU, not the EU for itself but for the benefit of our residents and citizens of BiH. Therefore nothing must disrupts us, neither internally nor on the external plane, in the realization of our aspirations and desires, and that is to accede to the EU,” said Covic.
He said that the question that burdens relations, the announced referendum in RS, should be resolved internally.
