Reaction on attacks in Knin: “Extremely serious attacks on the Serbian community in Croatia”

Leader of the Serbian National Council Milorad Pupovac says an attack on Serbs in Knin has the features of a protection squadron group /genuine fascist units/ and that it is neither accidental nor spontaneous.

“Those were extremely serious attacks on the Serbian community. Five cars with 15 people wearing balaclavas cannot just accidentally or spontaneously come to the village of Uzdolje,” stated Pupovac.

He asserted that the attack showed that Croatia was not a peaceful or safe country.

“As a member of the EU, Croatia sets a very bad example to non-members and contributes to destabilising the area of the former Yugoslavia,” Pupovac told Index website.

Five people including a nine-year-old were injured when a group of masked attackers stormed a café in the municipality of Biskupija outside Knin where guests were watching a Champions League play-off match between the Belgrade Red Star and the Swiss Young Boys on Wednesday evening.

The injured were hospitalised in a local hospital.

Several people raided a local bar in Đevrske outside Kistanje too and started provoking the guests who were watching the game there, and the bar owner said those provocations were mainly based on ethnic grounds.

The Šibenik-Knin Police Administration reports that several persons who are brought in connection with the attack on the owner and guests of the bar in Uzdolje outside Knin were taken in for criminal processing.

Chairman of the Serbian Parliament’s Committee on Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Miodrag Linta says the current authorities in Croatia, which are practicing pro-Ustasha policy, are solely responsible for the last two anti-Serb physical attacks near Knin.

ZAGREB AUTHORITY EXCLUSIVELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ATTACKS ON SERBS

At the same time, he asked the European Commission and the embassies of the United States, Germany, Great Britain and others in Zagreb to publicly and strictly condemn the latest physical attacks on Serbs in the villages of Uzdolje and Đevrske near Knin and demand that Croatian authorities find and punish the organisers and perpetrators of the crime.

Linta said that Ustasha forces of about 20 men wearing balaclavas and carrying bats, brutally and physically attacked Serbs at the Petko cafe in the village of Uzdolje near Knin, who were peacefully watching the Red Star-Young Boys match, shouting “Is it the Red Star you are watching here,” cursing Chetnik mother and saying that they would kill them all.

“The Ustasha forces savagely demolished the `Tera` cafe in Đevrske near Knin the same night and threatened Serbs who were also peacefully watching the Red Star football match,” Linta added and the Committee on the Serbs in the Region announced.

Linta, who is also the chairman of the Committee, notes that these are just two in a series of hate crimes against Serbs, by which the Ustasha forces are sending a clear message that the remaining Serbs are not desirable in Croatia and that it is best for them to move out or assimilate.

He stressed that the statement issued by the Croatian police reading that the aforementioned hate crimes are qualified as a criminal offense of violent behavior, causing physical harm and damaging another person’s property, is a scandalous and shameful.

Several persons entered a local cafe in Đevrske near Kistanje, and began provoking guests who were watching the match.

It was mostly about provocations on a national basis, the owner of the cafe said.

The Šibenik-Knin Police Administration announced that several persons, who were linked to the attack on the owner and guests of the cafe in Uzdolje near Knin, were brought in for criminal investigation.

PDP leader Branislav Borenović believes an attack on Serbs in Knin is no accident, but the result of nationalist rhetoric and tacit acceptance of growing radicalism in Croatia.

BORENOVIĆ: ATTACK ON SERBS RESULT OF RADICALISM

“I expect the main holders of public office in Croatia to not only sharply condemn the incident, but also show by personal example that diversity in Croatia is acceptable and desirable, and that the country will do all it can to punish such cases most severely, and fully protect the Serbian ethnic minority,” said Borenović.

He pointed out that the PDP had submitted an initiative to the National Assembly of Republika Srpska to form a joint commission with Serb representatives from Croatia that will work to improve the position of Serbs there, reports the PDP.

DAČIĆ: ATTACK IS RESULT OF CROATIA’S FLIRTING WITH USTASHISM

Serbia’s Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić has said that the recent two attacks on Serbs in Knin and everything that happened there is the result of “many years of flirting by the current Croatian authorities with the Ustashism and the glorification of crimes against Serbs.”

“When you in practice legalize ‘for the homeland ready’ /Ustashe/ greeting, expel the Cyrillic script, and leave Serbs without electricity in the native area of ‘your’ scientist Nikola Tesla, then it becomes natural for thugs to storm a café and beat even children only because they were watching the Red Star /Belgrade’s football team/,” Dačić told the Večernje Novosti daily on Thursday.

He has said that it is sad to watch the fall of the Croatian society and Europe which is watching it in silence.
