Romania has placed first in the Balkans in a survey on press freedom. It ranked 45th out of a 180 countries included in the survey. Serbia came next in 54th place, climbing up from 63rd position last year. It is followed by Croatia at 65, with Bosnia in 66th position climbing two spots from last year.
Bulgaria dropped from 87th to 100 and according to the report it remains the worst performing EU country. While, Montenegro came in at 114 and has ranked the worst in the region.
The annual report reflects the degree of freedom that journalists, news organizations and citizens enjoy in each country, and the efforts made by the authorities to respect and ensure respect for these freedoms. The report says that journalists’ safety continues to be a major concern in Balkan countries.
