So far, members of the European Union have not requested a suspension of the visa free regime for Western Balkan countries. There have not been any talks about starting a safeguard clause, Western diplomats in Brussels told Tanjug.
European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Cecilia Malmstom said yesterday that some countries have already informally discussed the safeguard clause, which provides for the possibility of suspension of the visa free regime for the countries from which false asylum seekers come, including Serbia.
Tanjug’s sources in Brussels, however, argue that the initiation mechanism is unlikely, given that both Serbia and other Western Balkan countries have demonstrated that they are doing everything in their power to reduce the influx of asylum seekers.
