The 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF), the biggest sports event in the country in the past 35 years, was ceremonially come to an end on Friday with the quenching of the ‘Flame of Peace’ in Istočno Sarajevo (East Sarajevo).
EYOF 2019 is for Sarajevo and Istočno Sarajevo much more than a sports event. It is the product of cooperation between two parts of a city that was brutally divided during the 1992-95 war.
Norway’s athletes take the most medals at EYOF 2019
With six gold, one silver and five bronze medals, Norwegians were the most successful athletes at the European Youth Olympic Festival held in Sarajevo and Istočno Sarajevo over the past week.
They are followed by Swedish athletes who won five gold and silver medals along with two bronze medals while the French took the third place with four gold, three silver and four bronze medals.
Among the first ten nations were also Austria (three gold, one silver and one bronze), Hungary (3, 0, 3), Russia (2, 7, 3), Slovakia (2, 2, 0), Poland (2, 1, 2), Germany (2, 1, 1) and Italy (1, 3, 1).
