Referendum to decide Bosnia and Herzegovina’s NATO integration

0

NATO’s integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be decided by referendum in Republika Srpska, said the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik.

Dodik said he understands the desire to join NATO due to recent history, but “if NATO thinks it is a good chance also for Serbians let it come and convince the Serbian population.” He did though promise to act in accordance with the will of Serbian population.

Mentioning the current crisis in Ukraine, Dodik said Bosnia and Herzegovina will not join the EU in imposing sanctions against Russia for the annexation of Crimea unlike its neighbor Montenegro.

Bosnia and Herzegovina signed the Membership Action Plan in 2010 and the Second Individual Partnership Action Plan in 2011 as part of the accession process to NATO, but the President of Republika Srpska, as a member of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tripartite presidency can block the country’s integration with NATO.
