A commemoration in honour of the fallen veterans and civilians of the defence and homeland war was held in the Christ the Saviour Church in Banjaluka marking the start of celebrations of the Day of the Army of Republika Srpska on Thursday.
The commemoration, which is conducted by the clergy of the Banjaluka Diocese, is attended by the envoy of the president of Republika Srpska Miladin Dragicevic, Deputy Minister of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina Boris Jerinic, and many officers and soldiers of the 3rd /Republika Srpska/ Infantry Regiment.
Wreaths will be laid in the St Pantelija cemetery after the commemoration. The flowers will be laid by the Srpska President Milorad Dodik, delegations of the National Assembly and Government, which will be headed by Minister of Labour and Veterans’ Affairs Milenko Savanovic, and envoy of the BiH Presidency member from Republika Srpska, Zoran Djeric.
The Army of Republika Srpska was formed on May 12, 1992 by a decision of the National Assembly of the Serb Republic of BiH in Banjaluka. It was integrated into the BiH Armed Forces as the 3rd Regiment.
A total of 215,621 people or 16 per cent of the total population of Republika Srpska took part in the Army, and around 30,000 people, including around 23,000 members of the Army, were killed.
