On 16 September 1861, the city of Zagreb awarded the Charter of honorary citizen to Serbian language reformer Vuk Stefanović Karadžić , giving him “all the rights, privileges and benefits as any other citizen of Zagreb, which belong to him according to law and the old folk custom”.

Interestingly, the Charter given to Vuk Karadžić was written in Serbian Cyrillic, and one of Zagreb’s streets bore the name of Vuk Karadžić until 1992.
